Andean Camelids, The lords of the moorlands

The relationship between highland man and the camelids that inhabit, it is a strong family bond. Unlike Western culture where they are considered productive inputs, for the women and men of the Abyayala plateau, they are close beings to whom they name them and consider them part of their family and in some cases, sacred.

The llama (Lama Glama) is the tallest and most resistant, everything is useful, from its droppings to its padded hooves that allow it to cross large areas and link the villages spread across the immensity of the high plateau.

The family to which it belongs, artiodactyls, suborder tilopods, has three genera and others that became extinct over time, due to natural phenomena and predation by human beings. Another example is the guanacu (Lama guanacoie), the alpaca (Vicugna pacos) and the wild vicuña (Vicugna vicugna), sought after and harassed for its exquisite fur.

These four superb examples of the highland fauna have contributed to the formation of the Tiwanaku and Incan civilizations for millennia and their presence is found in cave paintings, ceramics and textiles that attest to their importance and veneration. The degree of sophistication that they reached for their design is the result of their relationship with indigenous religiosity by forming hybrid beings with their corresponding symbology. Thus there are representations of condors and llamas, also jaguars and fish, forming an imaginary of extraordinary beauty.

A fascinating spectacle is to see, in the Uyuni salt flats, the groups of llamas that blend in with the salt and only highlight their multicolored cargoes. It has a bell-sporting leader who keeps the beat and knows the way; He advances alongside the llama who sings an aerophone melody that makes his excursion more bearable. Many owners make small shoes for them so that the salt does not damage their pads. The origin of the flame dance is related to this human conjunction to those who serve, and they pay their tribute and veneration for their services by anthropomorphizing them.

Still in some communities in Bolivia, they select specimens that are distinguished by the fineness of their wool, they raise them so that when they are ready to be sheared, they are dyed and that wool is woven by the grandmother or mother to shelter the future infant that will be born. During this process, the father or godparents compose music that these camelids listen to so that their wool is soft and delicate and welcomes the new being.

This 2024 marks its year and the Collective of Bolivian artists Uara Uara will exhibit works with this theme, from different perspectives and styles.

Año Internacional de los Camélidos

Camélidos Andinos, los señores de los páramos 

La relación del hombre de las tierras altas con los camélidos que la habitan, es de un fuerte vínculo familiar. A diferencia de la cultura occidental donde son considerados insumos productivos, para las mujeres y hombres del altiplano de Abyayala, son seres cercanos a quienes les ponen nombre y los consideraran parte de su familia y en algunos casos, sagrados.

La llama (Lama Glama) es la de mayor altura y resistencia, todo es útil, desde sus deposiciones hasta sus pezuñas con almohadillas que le permite cruzar grandes extensiones y vincular a los poblados repartidos en la inmensidad altiplánica.

La familia a la que pertenece, artiodáctilos, sub orden tilópodos tiene tres géneros y otros que se extinguieron en el transcurso del tiempo, por los fenómenos naturales y la depredación de los seres humanos. Otro ejemplar es el guanacu (Lama guanacoie), la alpaca (Vicugna pacos) y la vicuña, (Vicugna vicugna) agreste y salvaje, buscada y asediada por su exquisito pelaje.

Estos cuatro soberbios ejemplares de la fauna altiplánica han contribuido a la formación de las civilizaciones de Tiwanaku y el incario durante milenios y, su presencia se encuentra en pinturas rupestres, cerámicas y textiles que atestiguan su importancia y veneración. El grado de sofisticación que llegaron para su diseño es fruto de su relación con la religiosidad indígena al conformar seres híbridos con su correspondiente simbología. Así existen representaciones de cóndores y llamas, asimismo jaguares y peces, conformando un imaginario de extraordinaria belleza.

Un espectáculo fascinante es ver, en el salar de Uyuni, los grupos de llamas que se confunden con la sal y solo resaltan sus cargamentos multicolores. Tiene un líder que luce una campana que lleva el ritmo y conoce el camino; avanza junto al llamero que entona una melodía en aerófono que hace su excursión más llevadera. Muchos dueños les fabrican pequeños calzados para que la sal no maltrate sus almohadillas. El origen de la danza llamerada tiene relación con esta conjunción humana a los que sirven, y estos le rinden su homenaje y veneración por sus servicios antropomorfizándolas.

Todavía en algunas comunidades de Bolivia, seleccionan ejemplares que se distinguen por la finura de su lana, los crían para que cuando estén listas para ser trasquiladas, sean teñidas y esa lana sea tejida por la abuela o la madre para abrigar al futuro infante que nacerá. Durante este proceso, el padre o los padrinos componen música que escuchan estos camélidos para que su lana sea suave y delicada y acoja al nuevo ser.

Este año se celebra su año y el Colectivo de artistas bolivianos Uara Uara exhibirá obras con este tema, desde diferentes perspectivas y estilos.
